Amateur sports have ignoble past -- Joel Black
Before UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank makes any more statements about paying student athletes, I suggest she discuss “amateurism” with her own history department.
The genesis of “amateurism” can be traced back to the English aristocracy that didn’t want its sons to be challenged by the commoners in athletic contests. In modern days, its used by the NCAA, Olympic Committees and universities that don’t want to share the wealth these kids bring in.
