CHICAGO _ Lori Lightfoot is coming into the Chicago mayor’s office pledging to overhaul the city’s police force. She isn’t the first incoming mayor to make such a promise, but she may be the one with best chance of actually getting it done. One reason is that she’ll have a federal judge as an ally after she’s sworn in Monday. U.S. District Judge Robert Dow recently approved a court-monitored police reform plan. —ATTEMPTED ARSON-SYNAGOGUE: Chicago police are stepping up patrols at synagogues as well as Jewish schools and businesses after an attempted arson at a synagogue and vandalism near others.

—WORKER DEATH-SIGN: Authorities say a contract worker from Illinois has died while working on an electronic sign at a restaurant in northwestern Indiana.

—U OF ILLINOIS-DEGREES: Preliminary numbers show that the University of Illinois system expects to award more than 22,000 degrees this year.

—SIU-PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH: A 27-person committee has been formed to find the next president of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

—TRUCK CRASH-SPRING GROVE: Sheriff’s officials in northern Illinois say a pickup truck struck an SUV, utility pole and fence before crashing into a home and pinning a woman who was asleep. Photos.

BBN--PHILLIES-CUBS

CHICAGO _ It’s Jake Arrieta versus Yu Darvish when the Philadelphia Phillies open a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Monday. Arrieta is facing his former team for the first time since signing with Philadelphia after the 2017 season. Darvish, who replaced Arrieta in Chicago’s rotation, has struggled since joining the Cubs. HOUSTON _ The Houston Astros open a four-game series with the Chicago White Sox on Monday, a day after their 10-game winning streak was snapped with a loss at Boston.
