Nine Hospitalized in Blast at Explosives Plant
LISBON, Portugal (AP) _ Nine people were hospitalized Wednesday after a hand grenade blew up in an explosives factory near Lisbon, hospital officials said.
The grenade exploded Tuesday afternoon at a factory of the Portuguese Explosives Company in Santa Marta de Corroios, 12 miles south of Lisbon, said the factory’s director, Carlos Pimenta Araujo.
He said the blast detonated other explosives stored nearby.
Speaking on Portuguese television Wednesday, Araujo said the explosion was probably caused by human error.
Doctors at San Jose Hospital in Lisbon said two of the injured were in critical condition but the rest of the injuries were not major.
