Seeding in Bronco and Mustang South Zone play begins to take shape
The second day of Pony Baseball’s South Zone Tournament at the Ruth Minchen Athletic Complex produced the start of seedings for Saturday’s all-important playoffs.
Eagle Pass captured the No. 1 seed and possibly the inside track to a pair of World Series berths with its play Friday.
The Mustang South Zone champion heads for Youngsville, La. and the Bronco South Zone champion departs for the Los Angeles, Calif., suburb of Los Alamitos.
In the Bronco 12U Green bracket, Eagle Pass has the top perch followed by Pharr, San Antonio Medina Valley and Kinder, La.
The bottom four finds the Corpus Christi Barracudas, San Benito, Conroe and Ft. Worth Optimists.
At 9 a.m. Saturday, Eagle Pass will oppose the Ft. Worth team to see which team advances to a 7:30 contest against the winner of the game pitting the fourth versus fifth seeds.
Seeding for the Red Division was still in the works as of late Friday.
The semifinals then kick off Sunday morning at 9, followed by the championship at 11:30.
In the Mustang Purple bracket, top-seeded Eagle Pass was followed by Harlingen, Louisiana, San Antonio Normoyle, Huntsville, Corpus Christi, Bear Creek and Ft. Worth Alvarado.
The same schedule applies in Mustang with 7:30 games deciding which teams advance to Sunday’s Final Four.
Huntsville, the Coast Region champion, struggled in pool play. It had to rally from a 6-2 deficit in Thursday’s game to force a 6-6 tie. Huntsville surrendered that sixth run because of a catcher’s poor throw back to the pitcher, allowing a runner from third base to score, creating the 6-2 deficit.
That was followed by a 10-4 defeat on Friday to Eagle Pass. Eagle Pass owned a 10-0 lead thanks to an inside-the-park home run that turned a small lead into a large one.
