Football: No. 2 Winona rallies past Century

September 30, 2018

WINONA — Century led state-ranked Winona at the half before the Winhawks rallied for a 44-28 victory in a Big Southeast District crossover football game on Friday.

The visiting Panthers led Winona, ranked No. 2 in the state in Class AAAA, 21-17 at the half. Century built its lead on touchdown runs by Colin Smith and Thomas Mergen and Arath Martinez’s 40-yard scoring strike to Jack Fisher.

Winona (5-0) scored a key touchdown just before the half when Jackson Nibbelink tossed a 27-yard scoring pass to Ethan Ringo with one second to play. Nibbelink and Ringo had hooked up on a 68-yard scoring play in the first quarter.

The Winhawks continued to use big plays in the second half.

“I don’t think we played very consistent defense,” Century coach Jon Vik said. “We didn’t play good gap defense.”

Trevor Pomeroy finished with 195 yards rushing for Winona and he ran for three touchdowns in the second half. Pomeroy scored on runs of 8, 52 and 43 yards. Speedy Terrell Hall also had a 61-yard TD run for the Winhawks.

Century quarterback Arath Martinez had another big passing day as he completed 21 of 34 passes for a career-high 285 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He passed for 270 yards a week ago.

“We threw the ball well,” Vik said. “We really moved the ball well in the first half. We just can’t afford to have the mental mistakes.”

Century’s lone TD in the second half came on Martinez’s 3-yard pass to Mark Leonard.

Winona’s Aaron Witt, a junior who has already had Division I offers, had three sacks from his defensive end position.

“I thought we protected the quarterback pretty well until we were in catch-up mode,” Vik said.

Both teams had strong offensive games. Century had 367 yards of offense while Winona had 478 yards.

“They have a really good offense,” Vik said. “They have a good football team from top to bottom.”

Tyler Sullivan had five receptions for 106 yards for Century and Smith had 57 yards rushing on 13 carries.

The loss snaps Century’s three-game winning streak. The Panthers (3-2) will host Owatonna at 7 p.m. next Friday.
