BEND, Ore. (AP) - Now that the wood is chopped, Martha Crisler can concentrate again on her new project - hitting a baseball 200 feet off a tee and over a six-foot fence.

The payoff for the wood - ″an annual fall project,″ Crisler said - is fuel for the fireplace. The payoff for the 200-foot homer would be $50,000.

Crisler and seven other Gillette Sweepstakes winners are already assured of $10,000 and a trip to the first two games of the World Series. They’ll swing for the 200-foot fence on Friday, the day before the Series begins.

Crisler, entered the sweepstakes figuring she had a chance at one of the consolation prize sweatshirts. ″Realistically, that’s what we were after.″ Instead, she earned a chance to swing for the big prize.

She started practicing in June, working two or three times a week at the Class A Bend Rockies’ stadium with Vince Genna, a former American Legion star. ″I’m hitting the ball,″ the 65-year-old grandmother said, ″but not 200 feet over a 6-foot fence yet.″

The last sweepstakes winner was Bobby Shivar, who missed a 3-point shot for a $1 million payoff during the Final Four but took home a $25,000 consolation prize.

TORONTO (AP) - In a switch on the usual practice, a coach paid a fine to a player.

Pat Burns of the Toronto Maple Leafs forked over a $100 kangaroo-court fine to defenseman Dave Ellett following Toronto’s 2-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks Saturday night.

Burns’ remarks to referee Andy van Hellemond about a roughing call in the first period produced a bench minor, and left the Maple Leafs two men short. The Blackhawks scored on the power-play.

Burns said his protest paid off.

″I thought we started playing better,″ he said.
