LaVille holds off NP boys in Bi-County semis

Host LaVille used a 13-5 third-quarter edge to take control, then held off a New Prairie offensive surge to post a 47-44 boys basketball victory in the semifinals of the TCU Bi-County Tournament on Friday. Mike Klemczak poured in 17 points with five 3s, while Chase Ketterer posted 13 points to go with seven assists. Jake Tuttle nabbed five boards for the Cougars (5-8), who scored 21 points in the fourth quarter. New Prairie trailed 45-44 with seven seconds left and had the ball. It drove to the basket for the possible winning shot, but got called for an offensive foul. LaVille then went to the line and sank two free throws.

Weather cancels events

La Porte’s freshman boys basketball game at Hobart and Slicers’ boys and girls swim meets at Warsaw scheduled for Saturday have been canceled due to the weather. La Porte’s JV wrestling invite at Penn was also canceled. The Slicers’ varsity wrestling team won’t attend the Culver Invite as well.

LP’s Puckett on VU academic list

La Porte graduate Carter Puckett is among a program-record 60 Valparaiso University football players to make the Pioneer Football League honor roll. The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in football at member institutions during the fall semester and posted a 3.0 grade-point average or higher during the semester while enrolled full-time in accordance with NCAA rules. Puckett is a long snapper majoring in business analytics.

LP girls hoops game canceled

Due to an unexpected situation that arose at South Bend Washington, the Slicers JV and varsity girls basketball games scheduled for Saturday at Washington have been canceled.

Glenn boys edge Argos at buzzer, make Bi-County final

John Glenn’s boys basketball team won a buzzer-beating thriller, 39-36, over Argos in a TCU Bi-County Tournament semifinal on Friday night at LaVille. The Falcons (8-6) prevailed on Aaron Wright’s catch and shoot as time expired after Gabe Weiss’ beautiful twirling pass. Glenn, who led 20-13 at half, got clutch performances by Carter Yung and Evan Dreibelbeis to secure the victory. Glenn will face the host Class 2A No. 6 Lancers (12-2) for the TCU Bi-County Tournament title on Saturday night at about 7 p.m. CST.

NP grapplers down Glenn, earn great record

New Prairie’s wrestling team finished the regular season with a 71-12 rout over visiting John Glenn on Thursday night. The Cougars earned a 31-4 record, making this one of the best seasons in the 50 years of New Prairie wrestling. The Cougars had 14 seniors walk along with their loved ones for their last match at New Prairie. These seniors won 105 matches over their four years. Wrestler of the night was the Cougars’ Austin Lesniak.

LP moves swim sectional, basketball game

The boys swim sectional originally scheduled at La Porte on Feb. 14 & 16 will now be at Chesterton High School. The Slicers JV & varsity boys basketball home games versus Goshen on Feb. 16 will now be played on Feb. 12 at 5 p.m. at Slicer Gym. La Porte will be one of the northern hosts for the girls basketball semistate on Feb. 16.

Glenn girls fall in Bi-County semis, O-D rolls

John Glenn’s girls basketball team lost a thriller, 40-38, in a TCU Bi-County Tournament semifinal on Thursday night at LaVille. Bethany Hayden recorded 13 points for the Falcons (11-9), and Morgan Plunkett had 11 points. Glenn got outscored 14-4 in the second quarter, but put together a second-half comeback, outscoring the Lions 26-21, but it wasn’t quite enough. Bremen (14-6) next meets Oregon-Davis (12-7) in the TCU Bi-County Tournament final on Saturday night at 5:30 p.m. CST at LaVille. O-D cruised 65-32 over the host Lancers in another TCU Bi-County Tournament semifinal on Thursday night.

WinterFest Cornhole Tournament

Whether you call it cornhole or bags, enjoy your favorite outdoor summer activity indoors this winter at the WinterFest Cornhole Tournament. This new event, presented by American Legion Hamon Gray Post 83, will be Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Civic Auditorium. Doors open and registration begins at 1 p.m., with pool play beginning at 2 p.m. The entry fee is $50 per two-man team, or $25 for individuals. Falcons wrestling drops decision

John Glenn’s wrestling team fell 46-30 at LaVille on Wednesday night. The Falcons’ Nathan May (106 pounds), Brandon Becker (145), Aaron Sherman (160), Gavin Finch (170) and Jacob Borton (195) recorded wins.

Free fishing contest offered

Chief’s Bait is offering a free fishing contest as part of a customer appreciation event Saturday. There is no entry fee or registration. One fish per angler will be weighed. There will also be food available. Cut-off for the weigh-in will be 3 p.m. Eligible species will be steelhead, brown trout, coho and whitefish. A center pin outfit valued at $400 will be awarded to the best steelhead, among other prizes. Contest details are not complete.
