Ansonia police arrest Hamden man in fatal crash
ANSONIA - Police have arrested a 24-year-old Hamden man in an accident that killed a 78-year-old driver.
Zachary Mercer was arrested Monday and charged with misconduct with a motor vehicle, reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle with out of state plates, violation of totaled vehicle regulations and failure to obey traffic control
Mercer’s arrest was the result of an investigation of a fatal motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Main Street and Bridge Street on Sept. 23, where Garrett Dalton died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.
The three-vehicle crash occurred on Main Street near Bridge Street at 5:20 a.m. The fire department used the “jaws of life” to rescue a victim who was trapped in one of the cars.
Lt. Patrick Lynch said the investigation was done with the assistance of the Orange and Woodbridge Police Department Accident Reconstruction Teams and the Connecticut State Police Crash Analysis and Reconstruction Squad.
“During the investigation of the accident detectives learned that Mercer’s vehicle had been previously listed as a salvage vehicle and did not pass an inspection to be registered in the State of Connecticut, so Mercer registered the vehicle in Texas,” Lynch said.
Mercer posted a $10,000 bond and has a court appearance on Jan. 19 in Derby Superior Court.
