LEOMINSTER -- Police are searching for a driver who they say fled a Saturday morning rollover crash on Mechanic Street that sent a passenger to the hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of a BMW 535 hit a Toyota Prius at about 12:20 a.m. near Mechanic and Vinton streets leading to the Leominster Connector, causing the BMW to roll onto its roof, said police Sgt. John Fraher.

“Speed was definitely a factor,” Fraher said, noting that the speed limit on that area of Mechanic street is 35 mph.

The person who drove the BMW was ejected from the crash, then fled the scene on foot. Fraher said as of 10 a.m. he had not been located.

A male passenger in the BMW was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester for treatment of serious injuries, he said.

Fraher said the man who drove the Prius did not report any injuries.

The “head-on side swipe” damaged the front right passenger’s side of the Prius, he said, adding that damage to the BMW was extensive from the collision and roll over.

The Fire Department responded to the crash and transported the passenger to the hospital, said Deputy Fire Chief Scott Cordio.

It took about two hours to clean up debris from the road, Fraher said.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
