ROCKFORD-VIOLENT CRIME

ROCKFORD, Ill. _ Statistics released by the Rockford Police Department show violent crime in the northern Illinois city dropped 11 percent in 2018 compared to the previous year. Violent crime is offenses that include murder, non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Statistics released Wednesday show the drop in violent crime came despite more homicides last year. SENT: 150 words.

—ILLINOIS GOVERNOR-ADJUTANT GENERAL: Gov. J.B. Pritzker has named an Air Force officer to lead the Illinois National Guard.

—HIT AND RUN-FATALITY: Bail has been denied a suburban Chicago man accused of driving the vehicle that struck and killed a student as she walked to school.

—SOLICITATION ARRESTS: A sheriff’s gang task force in northeastern Illinois has arrested 14 men on solicitation-of-sex charges.

—SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS-HIGHLAND: The small western Illinois community of Highland is poised to join the growing number of cities and towns to install surveillance cameras to fight crime.

—POLICE CHASE-CRASH: Authorities say a man has died after speeding away from police in northwestern Indiana and crashing into a home.
