HS football roundup: It’s Martinsburg vs. Spring Valley in AAA

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Martinsburg earned its state-record 41st consecutive victory by beating rival Musselman, 42-14, Saturday in the Class AAA semifinals, setting up a third straight state championship game against Spring Valley at noon Saturday, Dec. 1, in Wheeling Island Stadium.

The win was No. 289 for Martinsburg head coach David Walker, making him the winningest coach in state history.

The Bulldogs, who defeated the Applemen by 70 points in their regular-season meeting, got on the board late in the first quarter when Naieem Kearney scored on a 47-yard touchdown run.

Martinsburg’s lead went to 21-0 by halftime with a pair of touchdowns from Grant Harman. He connected with Michael Boaitey for a 60-yard touchdown pass, then scored from 4 yards out to give the Bulldogs a three-score lead.

Martinsburg’s lead ballooned to 35-0 after the Bulldogs got rushing touchdowns from Harman and linebacker R.J. Barrett. After Musselman scored its first touchdown on 2-yard run by Tre Beard, but Martinsburg responded with a 62-yard touchdown run from Dewayne Grantham to make the score 42-7.

Beard found the end zone on a 65-yard run to cap the scoring.

BLUEFIELD 35, BRIDGEPORT 14: Bluefield broke out of a 7-7 tie by scoring the next three touchdowns and went on to defeat Bridgeport 35-14 in a Class AA semifinal game at Mitchell Stadium in Bluefield, West Virginia.

Bluefield (12-1) got 113 of its 289 rushing yards from Arnold Martin, who scored from 22 yards out to end of the Beavers’ first possession. Quarterback Chandler Cooper scored on a run and passed for another touchdown, both in the third quarter. Bluefield’s Isaiah Johnson capped the scoring with a 53-yard interception return with 3:23 left.

The Beavers, seeded second in Class AA, return to the championship game for the second straight season.

Bridgeport (11-2), the third seed, had 120 passing yards from Devin Vandergrift, and 112 net rushing yards, led by senior Jake Bowen, who gained 80 yards on 22 carries. Trey Pancake provided the Tribe’s first touchdown and Bowen scored in the fourth quarter.

Bluefield advances to the state finals against the Saturday winner of Weir at Fairmont Senior.

WILLIAMSTOWN 56, MIDLAND TRAIL 8: Class A No. 6 Williamstown exploded for 35 second-quarter points and rolled at No. 2 Midland Trail in a Class A state semifinal.

The Yellowjackets held a 7-0 lead after the first quarter before taking complete control of the game in the second quarter. Donathan Taylor of Williamstown had touchdown runs of 35 and 47 yards.

Williamstown (11-2) will play Wheeling Central for the Class A championship Saturday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m.
