Parents Sue Hard Rock Cafe

April 20, 1988

DALLAS (AP) _ A $1.3 million suit has been filed against Hard Rock Cafe in the alleged mauling of a 4-year-old girl by an English sheep dog.

Warren and Anne Balden alleged in the suit filed Tuesday that Hard Rock Cafe International Inc., a restaurant manager and the dog’s owner, a cafe employee, were negligent because they allowed the dog into the restaurant and failed to control it.

The Baldens say they and their daughter, Elise, were leaving the cafe on April 19, 1987, when the dog, with its owner nearby, ″seized the face of Elise Balden with its fangs, shaking (her) body and head like a rag doll.″

The suit said the girl will require cosmetic surgery. She received 70 stitches at Presbyterian Hospital immediately after the incident, Balden said.

The suit was filed after negotiations failed to produce a settlement, Balden said.

Randy Roberts, a lawyer for the cafe, said Tuesday he could not comment because he had not seen the suit.
