What’s your title?
What drove you to launch your own business?
As I was growing up, I tended to be a neat and orderly person. My brothers (three of them), on the other hand, were messy and would pay me to clean up after them. In 2010, I opened Cathie’s Cleaning Service, which this year was renamed C&J Cleaning Service.
How many hours do you typically work in a week?
The number of hours per week that I work depend on the number of cleaning jobs that I have scheduled.
How many employees?
I have eight employees.
When did you start your business?
I first opened my cleaning business in 2010 as Cathie’s Cleaning Service. This year, my business was renamed “C&J Cleaning Service”.
If you left another job to start this business, what was it?
Up until 2010, I was a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom.
Do you work elsewhere in addition to the time you put in at your business?
All of my time is devoted to my business.
What sacrifices did you make to launch this business and to keep it running?
As I continue to grow my business, I have had less discretionary time available to spend with my family. Part of relaunching my cleaning business as C&J Cleaning Service was to include my family members to spend more time together with them while we clean.
What is the best thing about owning a business?
I am able to maintain a flexible work schedule, while helping people with their cleaning needs.
What is the hardest thing about owning a business?
Owning a business has its demands, but the satisfaction of working with my current customers, meeting new people, and interacting with my staff more than offset those demands.
What’s your hope for your business in the next year?
I would like to grow my customer and employee bases.
What inspires you to keep doing it?
I feel that my team and I are making a difference by improving other peoples’ quality of life.
Knowing what you know now, would you do anything different?
I would have sooner engaged the services of a professional advertiser (e.g., development of business web site, business cards, direct mailings, advice and counsel, etc.).
