LOWELL -- Register of Deeds Richard Howe appeared to be cruising to victory late Tuesday night as results trickled in from the North Middlesex communities.

He was facing challenger Karen Cassella, an independent who is employed at the registry as a junior document reception clerk.

Howe appeared to be leading by a 2-to-1 margin.

“I’m pleased with the results thus far, but I want to wait until the final numbers from Lowell are in,” Howe said at 11 p.m.

In total, the district includes 10 communities.

In Dracut, Howe led Cassella 7,822 to 3,774.

In Billerica, he led 10,765 to 4,347.

In Westford, he led 7,783 to 2,309.

In Tyngsboro, he led 3,281 to 1,391.

In Dunstable, he led 1,035 to 423.
