Wilkes-Barre Man Sentenced For Firearm Charges

May 17, 2019

A Wilkes-Barre man was sentenced this week to 2½ years in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Shakim Varick, 37, was sentenced Tuesday to the prison term followed by three years of probation, prosecutors said. U.S. District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani imposed the sentence. Prosecutors said Varick admitted possessing a gun along with heroin and crack-cocaine that he intended to distribute in Wilkes-Barre in March 2015. Wilkes-Barre police and the FBI investigated the case. — JAMES HALPIN
