Madeline Finn debuts surprise solo EP ‘Colerain Mansion’

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland singer-songwriter Madeline Finn has embarked on her first solo venture with her debut EP “Colerain Mansion.”

Finn is the lead singer and guitarist of Cleveland rock band The Whiskey Hollow, and in the past was the singer of pop-punk band Envoi and rock band Maddie Finn (her high school band which won the Tri-C High School Rock-Off in 2010 -- the first female-fronted group to do so).

The six-song project was released this morning. It arrived just a couple of weeks after Finn started writing the songs during an artistic residency at Colerain Mansion, the album’s namesake.

Finn stayed at the centuries-old building, crafting songs in the span of four days.

“I only had two of the songs halfway done, and the rest were total, on-the-spot. I was there for two days by myself writing, and then Steve [Perrino] the engineer came and my drummer Tom [Stankiewicz] came, and we tracked them, mixed and mastered the next week, and released the week after that.”

The album was largely inspired by Finn’s stay at Colerain Mansion, a building that once served as a home for a local ironmaster in Franklin Township, Pennsylvania. The home has been passed down through a family, and it recently transformed into an artist retreat home. Finn was the first musician to stay at Colerain Mansion to work on a project.

Each song even incorporates a physical aspect of the historic home. Finn uses one of the home’s old pianos on “When It’s Dark,” rings a bell attached to the home on the title track, and slams books from the home’s library as a clap sound on some songs.

“There’s bits and pieces of the house on every part of the record,” Finn said.

“Colerain Mansion” is available on streaming platforms now, and Finn will host a free release party tomorrow, Sept. 6 at Cleveland Urban Winery. The performance will take place after Finn’s round-table series about touring from 6-8 p.m., with AJ & The Woods performing at 8 p.m. and Finn performing at 8:30 p.m. Read more about the show.
