Former North Carolina county manager, son indicted for fraud

April 5, 2018

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A federal prosecutor says a former North Carolina county manager and her son have been indicted on embezzlement and fraud charges.

Local news outlets report U.S. Attorney Andrew Murray announced on Thursday indictments for former Buncombe County Manager Wanda Greene and former county employee Michael Greene. The indictments follow a nearly nine-month federal criminal investigation.

Prosecutors say that, over a decade, Greene and her son misused county-issued credit cards and used other employees’ cards to make approximately $200,000 worth of improper purchases. According to the indictment, Wanda Greene repeatedly used her cards to purchase gift cards from various vendors, then used the gift cards to buy personal items for herself and others.

Thomas Amburgey, the attorney for Wanda Greene, said in a statement his client is cooperating with the government.
