BOSTON (AP) _ The Boston Red Sox placed infielder John Valentin on the 15-day disabled list Thursday because of a problem with his right heel.

Team spokesman Kevin Shea said Valentin was to undergo another examination with the team's doctors before Thursday night's game against the Detroit Tigers.

``He has been getting treatment for a problem with his heel the past couple of weeks,'' Shea said. ``It's something that's been nagging him the past couple of weeks.''

Infielder Chris Stynes was reactivated from the disabled list to take Valentin's place.

Valentin was coming back from last year's season-ending knee injury. He had been starting at shortstop while Nomar Garciaparra recovers from wrist surgery.

Valentin, who is in his 10th season with the Red Sox, is hitting .200 (12-for-60) in 20 games.
