M.A. Hanna Will Eliminate 260 Jobs

August 6, 1998

CLEVELAND (AP) _ Chemical maker M.A. Hanna Co. plans to eliminate 260 jobs and close five of its 56 plants to try to improve profits, the company said Thursday.

The jobs represent about 4 percent of Hanna’s work force.

The plants to be closed by next June won’t be publicly identified until affected workers are notified, probably on Friday, said spokeswoman Sue Engelhart.

Douglas J. McGregor, Hanna’s chairman and chief executive, said the moves are meant to increase growth by improving customer service and lowering production costs.

Cleveland-based Hanna makes chemicals for the rubber and plastics industries and has operations in North America, Europe and Asia.
