Annan to Meet With Israel’s Peres
UNITED NATIONS (AP) _ Secretary-General Kofi Annan will meet Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres on Sunday to discuss Mideast peace prospects, a U.N. spokesman said Friday.
Peres is also scheduled meet with Secretary of State Colin Powell in Washington on Tuesday.
Annan, who won the Nobel Peace Prize last week, has played a key behind-the-scenes role in encouraging the Israelis and Palestinians to resume peace talks.
Peres’ meetings will be held against the backdrop of the unprecedented killing of an Israeli Cabinet minister and an acceleration in U.S. diplomacy in the region.
After months of low-key consultations with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, the U.S. administration is staking out a much higher profile, with President Bush publicly endorsing the creation of a Palestinian state.
