Youth Center to Open on Site of Camp
BERLIN (AP) _ West German and Polish groups have agreed on plans for a $1.6 million youth center to be built on the site of the former Auschwitz death camp, project organizers said Friday.
Wolfgang Brinkel, a spokesman for the Berlin-based Aktion Suehnezeichen group, said the center would be completed by the end of the year.
Brinkel’s group, a private organization working to promote West German- Polish ties, has been holding discussions about a possible center with Polish groups for nearly 15 years.
The center will include residential space for up to 60 people, seminar rooms, lecture halls and other facilities, Brinkel said.
During World War II, the Nazi regime used the camp in Poland as the main extermination camp for Poles, Jews and Slavs.
