Katy ISD board names new principal
The assistant principal at Maurice L. Wolfe Elementary School has been tapped to take over the top job at another elementary campus in the Katy Independent School District.
In a unanimous vote during the Jan. 21 Katy ISD school board meeting, veteran educator Michael Schwartz was named principal at Ursula Stephens Elementary School, 2715 N. Fry.
“We’re excited to have Michael aboard. He’s done wonderful work in the district for a number of years,” said Katy ISD Superintendent Ken Gregorski.
Schwartz — who attended the school board meeting where he was promoted — has spent more of his 13 years in education with Katy ISD. He joined the district in 2006 as a teacher at Cimarron Elementary, spending six years as a classroom teacher and instructional coach in the language arts and social studies field. He left the district to take a second job as an assistant principal in the Spring Branch Independent School District.
Schwartz returned to Katy ISD in 2014 as an assistant principal at Bear Creek Elementary. He remained there for four years before joining the staff at Wolfe Elementary.
Schwartz said he has heard “great things” about the students, staff and community at Stephens Elementary and was eager to get to know the community.
“The school has such a great reputation and my mission will be to ensure that this school continues to be a high performing Title 1 campus in the years ahead,” he added.
Schwartz received a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from Texas A&M University and a graduate degree in educational leadership and policy studies from the University of Texas at Arlington.
