DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines teacher has given his father's old vehicle to a student from Africa to help her get a good start in college.

Anyesi Kamanda's parents died when she was a toddler. She lived for a time with an aunt and uncle in Malawi, and she's been living in Des Moines with her older sister while attending and graduating from Roosevelt High.

Kamanda played on the school's girls soccer team, which is coached by teacher Brandon Hope. He told The Des Moines Register that he inherited the sport utility vehicle when his dad died and thought it would give Kamanda "a break — just a break."

Kamanda's first road trip will be to Cedar Rapids, where she'll live with a friend and attend Kirkwood Community College.
