MASHANTUCKET, Conn. (AP) _ Round-by-round of the John Ruiz-Evander Holyfield fight Saturday night for the WBA heavyweight title:
The first round was marked by mauling and wrestling. Ruiz went down, apparently from a right hand to the head by Holyfield. Referee Steve Smoger called it no knockdown. There were no other serious punches landed, although Ruiz landed a couple of good left hands.
The AP gives the round to Holyfield.
Ruiz opened the round with a good left jab. Holyfield came back with a right and they clinched. Action slowed as both men seemed to try to land the big punch. Ruiz got in a right hand before they clinched again. Ruiz landed a sharp right and Holyfield landed a right. Again they had to be parted. Ruiz got in a fairly good left jab, and a left to the body by Ruiz. Holyfield missed with a right and then clubbed a left in a clinch. Ruiz got in a left to the body, a right to the head and then a left to the body at the bell.
Holyfield opened the round with a couple of right jabs. Once again, the action slowed. Ruiz got in a good jab just past the 30-second mark, then the two men clinched. The referee talked to both about the clinching. Holyfield got in a right and a left at the midway point that shook Ruiz. Ruiz landed a low blow, but got away with it. Then he landed a couple of jabs. Ruiz got in a right hand with a minute to go. Both men landed shots to the body with about 30 seconds left and then clinched. Ruiz got in a good jab and then another jab.
