NEPA Rainbow Alliance To Hold Pass The Present Holiday Party

This week, staff writer Laura Rysz talks with Anthony Melf about the upcoming Pass the Present Holiday Party with the NEPA Rainbow Alliance .

Residence: Wilkes-Barre

Professional background: Workforce development

Title: Board member, NEPA Rainbow Alliance

Q: What is the mission of NEPA Rainbow Alliance?

A: The NEPA Rainbow Alliance provides education, support and advocacy for LGBTQIA individuals and families while working to advance fairness and equality in Northeast Pennsylvania.

Q: Explain how the event works.

A: Pass the Salt is a community dinner series where individuals attend for free but pay for whatever they order to eat and drink. It’s no different than meeting friends out for dinner. In this case, you get to meet other members of the LGBTQIA community over a meal. Each month we meet up at a different restaurant/vendor in NEPA. Prior to the day of the dinner, the NEPA Rainbow Alliance creates a Facebook event in which you are encouraged to RSVP so we can give an accurate count to the vendor.

Q: What will be on hand at the December event?

A: It’s a special holiday edition: Pass the Present. At this event, guests will be able to order dinner and drinks per usual. However, the vendor will donate some appetizers and offer, for purchase, holiday drink specials. Also, guests are encouraged to bring a wrapped gift valued at $10 or less to participate in a pass-the-present activity. We’ll play a game where each participant ends up with one of the wrapped items. Additionally, guests are invited to dress either in their holiday best or in a festive costume. An award will be given to the most festive costume, i.e. a snowman, ornament, elf, ugly sweater, etc.

Q: Why is community support crucial?

A: Without community support, we would be short of vendors to schedule our monthly Pass the Salt events. While we certainly could meet up at each other’s homes, what makes Pass the Salt unique is that it shows LGBTQIA individuals that there are places they can go out in the community where they are accepted. Supporting our dinners is a great way to show our partner restaurants/vendors that you see the good work they’re doing and want to see them continue supporting the LGBTQIA community. As patrons at the event, you can help create these safe spaces with your presence. We want to meet you as we come together as equal parts of this greater community in NEPA.
