Rutgers Reserve Center Won’t Play
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) _ Backup center Ramaj St. James has a heart condition that will prevent him from playing basketball for Rutgers this season.
St. James, who recently changed his name from Jamar Holcomb, did not participate in any preseason practices. A junior college transfer, he played in 15 games last season and scored seven points in 50 minutes.
``It’s a shame that Ramaj’s medical condition will not allow him to play for us,″ new Rutgers coach Kevin Bannon said in a statement released by the school on Wednesday. ``Speaking for the entire team, I know we are all saddened that he won’t be on the floor with us anymore.″
St. James plans to stay in school and finish work toward his degree. The school will provide his medical care and he will retain his scholarship.
