Rookie Leads Crew Past Wizards, 2-0

July 24, 2005

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) _ Rookie Knox Cameron scored twice to lead the Columbus Crew to a 2-0 victory Saturday night over the Kansas City Wizards.

Cameron’s goals were the first of his MLS career and came just before and just after halftime.

Kyle Martino fought past Wizards defender Jose Burciaga Jr. to set up Cameron’s first goal in the 45th minute.

Martino again found Cameron with a pass along the end line moments into the second half, allowing the 21-year-old Jamaican to flip the ball past Wizards goalkeeper Bo Ohshoniyi.

Columbus (6-10-3) has won two straight for the first time this season. The Crew hadn’t scored multiple goals in a game for more than a month.

Kansas City (7-5-8) sharpened its attack following Cameron’s goals, and nearly scored when Davy Arnaud’s header from close range beat Crew goalkeeper Jonny Walker. But the shot deflected off the left goal post in the 50th minute.

Four minutes later, Wizards midfielder Sasha Victorine’s shot from 16 yards flew inches past the right post.

The Crew is unbeaten in three games since interim coach Robert Warzycha took over following the firing of Greg Andrulis on July 12.

Cameron’s first goal was the Crew’s fifth straight from a player scoring their first MLS goal.
