MAAC HONOR FOR STAGS’ MADDEN

After scoring three goals in the Fairfield University women’s soccer team’s home opener against Wagner, sophomore Alex Madden was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

“I’m really happy for Alex’s distinction this week,” Coach David Barrett said. “She had a great game on Friday, hopefully it’s a breakthrough for her and will lead to continued strong performances over the next few weeks.”

In a 1-1 weekend for the Stags, Madden had eight shots, with six on net.

ECC NAMES 3 UB PLAYERS

Three members of the University of Bridgeport women’s volleyball team have been recognized by the East Coast Conference for their outstanding play in the Purple Knights’ season-opening victory over Southern Connecticut State University.

Junior Emily Burford was named conference Player of the Week, freshman Amanda Keller was named Defensive Player of the Week and senior Ellie Rich was the Setter of the Week.

Burford helped UB to an impressive four-set victory over Southern Connecticut with 13 kills, five digs, two service aces, two blocks and one assist.

Keller had four sets, eight blocks (two solos), four kills and one service ace.

Rich had a double-double with 34 assists and 13 digs and also chipped in four kills, two blocks and a service ace.

FAIRFIELD WOMEN’S BASKETBALL LISTS NON-CONFERENCE FOES

The Fairfield University women’s basketball team announced their non-conference schedule, which will feature the Stags playing in six different states and schools from eight different conferences during a two-month span.

The Stags will begin their season on the road against Richmond on Nov. 9 and will open up play at Webster Bank Arena on Nov. 13 against LIU Brooklyn.

“Once again, I believe we have put together a challenging non-conference schedule,” said Coach Joe Frager, who will be starting his 12th season. “We are playing many quality programs from a variety of conferences, in hopes of preparing our team for the MAAC schedule.”

Fairfield will next hit the road to Cincinnati for their first-ever match against Xavier on Nov. 17. The Stags will spend the Thanksgiving weekend taking part in the Turkey Tip-off at Brown University starting Nov. 23 where they will open with Brown before facing Bucknell on Nov. 24 and UMass on Nov. 25.

The Stags will return home to Alumni Hall to face William & Mary on Dec. 2 and Northeastern on Dec. 5.

Fairfield will next travel to face Dartmouth, before the team travels to Las Vegas for the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic to take on Furman (Dec. 20) and Illinois-Chicago (Dec. 21).

UB HIRES ASSISTANT

The University of Bridgeport women’s basketball has announced the addition of Keith Jefferson as a new assistant coach.

Jefferson served as the varsity girls basketball coach at Essex County Newark Tech in New Jersey since 2013. Jefferson had the same position at Morristown-Beard School in Morristown, N.J., from 2010 to 2011. He also was an assistant coach at Kean University from 2008 to 2009.
