SYCAMORE – A semi truck driver lost control of his vehicle Thursday morning and ended up driving into some corn and stopping on the side of the road near the intersection of Peace Road and DeKalb Avenue.
Sycamore Police Sgt. Joe Meeks said a passerby called to report the semi in the ditch at 5:41 a.m. Thursday. He said the driver was southbound on Peace Road, veered off and crossed over the north Peace Road lanes, went into the ditch, came through corn crops at the northeast corner of DeKalb Avenue and Peace Road, came out of the corn on the DeKalb Avenue side and came to a stop just into the turn lane on DeKalb Avenue on the north side between Peace Road and Plaza Drive.
Meeks said police are still looking at what the cause of the crash was, since there weren’t any witnesses at the time the crash occurred, but he said the driver told police he had a coughing fit.
“That part we don’t entirely know,” Meeks said. “But we don’t suspect any DUI or anything of that sort.”
Meeks said no one was hurt and, other than corn crops and grass, there was no other property damage. He said citations for the driver are still pending, since the report is not yet complete and Illinois State Police still has to finish their investigation into the incident.
Meeks said police are still trying to contact the property owner that suffered crop damages in the crash. He said the driver eventually will be cited once the investigation is over, most likely for improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
“Basically, at this point, this is just a property damage accident,” Meeks said.
