SOFTBALL: G-SW edges rival Dwight in regional action

Matt Russell | Special to the Daily JournalMay 17, 2019

DWIGHT — The old adage about throwing away past matchups when you play your rivals, especially in the postseason, couldn’t have been truer Wednesday, when Gardner-South Wilmington and Dwight squared off in IHSA Class 1A Dwight Regional semifinal play.

Although the Trojans were 20-5 victors when the two squads squared off last month, it was the Panthers who got the last laugh Wednesday when they defeated the Trojans 7-4.

Gardner South-Wilmington improved to 14-10 overall on the season and advances to the regional championship game, and the Trojans end their season at 10-12.

“I think the girls had that last loss to Dwight in their heads a little bit,” Panthers coach Cassie Bexson said. “I kept telling them that this is a team we should play with and can beat.”
