Gang Members Attack Family, Killing Teen-age Rival and 4-Year-Old Boy
GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (AP) _ Gunmen opened fire with assault rifles as family members piled into their cars to see a movie, killing a rival gang member and a 4-year-old boy and wounding six other people, police said.
Killed in Saturday night’s shooting were Miguel Lorenzo Navarro, 17, and Frank Fernandez Jr., said Police Lt. Ron Weigand.
A group of family members and friends were getting into several vehicles to go see the movie ″Lethal Weapon 2″ when a truck filled with gang members drove by, witnesses said.
″It sounded like something big and fast,″ said the boy’s father, Frank Fernandez, a self-described former gang member.
″Everybody was yelling ’Get down 3/8 Get down 3/8 I tried to put everybody down, but my little boy was standing up in the back and he got shot in the chest,″ Fernandez said.
Navarro’s mother, Micki Camacho, said her son was released from the California Youth Authority three months ago and had just gotten a new job as a warehouse clerk and purchased his first car.
″I tried and tried to get him to quit the gang,″ she said. ″But he wouldn’t listen. He said it was too late.″
There were no arrests by Sunday night.
In nearby Los Angeles, police arrested 204 people on drug and other charges during the weekend in the latest sweep against gang violence that has plagued Southern California.
