FLORENCE, S.C. – Leaders with Helping Florence Flourish held a racial bridging movement luncheon Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in hopes of building stronger relationships across barriers.
Helping Florence Flourish thinks racial bridging is an important need in the Florence community.
“Today’s gathering shows me that the church in Florence wants to make our community stronger,” said Rev. Chris Handley, a team leader of Helping Florence Flourish. “I know we will have difficulties to face, and there will always be more to do. But today indicates to me that the people of God want to try to work at building strong relationship across the races. Relationships are the key!”
More than 100 people turned out in support of the racial bridging event. Church leaders, education, business and government professionals were among those in attendance as well as Florentines who said they hoped to be more engaged in the Florence community.
Part of the discussion included discussion on how to improve race relations. Among the ideas brought forth from roundtable discussion included creating intentional connections, where citizens get out of their comfort zones to understand each other – be it volunteering time at nonprofits, observing worship at another church or attending events supporting different causes – and create relationships.
The next Helping Florence Flourish event will be the Citywide Prayer Gathering at 7 p.m. Sept. 6 at Church at Sandhurst hosted by Ambassadors for Christ and La Trinidad. All are invited to come.
Helping Florence Flourish is helping promote the Florence Recreation Department’s Freedom Fest, which will be held for families and children of all ages from 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 8 at Freedom Florence Sports Complex. There will be activities, food, music and crunk cardio with Kaila. Admission is free. A rally will be held at 7 p.m. This is another Racial Bridging event.
