Yankees Sign Catcher Joe Oliver

NEW YORK (AP) _Free-agent catcher Joe Oliver signed a one-year, $1.1 million contract with the New York Yankees on Wednesday.

Oliver, 35, batted .265 with 10 home runs and 35 runs batted in for Seattle last season, and hit the 100th home run of his career on Sept. 15.

Originally signed by Cincinnati in 1983, Oliver has played for Milwaukee, Detroit and Pittsburgh as well as the Reds and Mariners in an 11-year major league career. He is expected to back up regular catcher Jorge Posada.
