Trooper held on assault charges released from custody

August 6, 2015

GARDNER, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts state trooper accused of injuring his girlfriend in a domestic violence incident was released from custody after a dangerousness hearing.

The Telegram & Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1OSiSsf ) Corey Benoit’s lawyer, Leonard Kesten presented new evidence in the Gardner hearing Wednesday pointing to Benoit’s twin brother as the alleged culprit.

The 36-year-old off-duty trooper was arrested Sunday after an altercation at his Royalston home that started after he asked his girlfriend to turn down the volume of music playing at a party. Authorities say the woman, who hasn’t been named, suffered a broken collarbone.

Kesten’s evidence suggests that Benoit’s twin brother, Chris Benoit, might have pushed the girl into a table after Corey Benoit allegedly pushed her earlier.

Corey Benoit is due back in court on Aug. 18.
