Football | USC tops Fillmore Central
HARMONY — Undefeated United South Central brought a robust defense to Harmony on Friday to face Fillmore Central in a Mid-Southeast District crossover game, and it was that defense that carried USC to a 22-13 win.
USC took the opening kickoff and drove 74 yards in 11 plays for a touchdown, with Zach Niebuhr plunging in from two yards. Then, in the middle of the second quarter, Isaac Meyer threw a 56-yard TD pass to Colby Klocek to make the score 14-0.
Meanwhile, Fillmore Central’s offense was struggling to get any rhythm going. Its first four drives resulted in two punts and two interceptions, but after the second USC score, the Falcons finally put together a drive, going 70 yards in nine plays, with Josh Peters scoring on a 10-yard run to make the score 14-7.
The Falcons cut the lead to 14-13 by taking the second half kickoff and driving 84 yards, with Peters scoring his second TD, this time from one yard. The conversion failed, making the score 14-13.
USC stretched its lead to 22-13 early in the fourth quarter and the Falcons never threatened again.
USC outgained Fillmore Central 337-220.
USC (6-0) is at JWP next week, while Fillmore Central (2-4) will host Wabasha-Kellogg.
