5. Women’s volleyball loss
5. How will the loss to Loyola Marymount affect the BYU women’s volleyball team and its seeding in the upcoming NCAA Tournament?
DICKSON: As the season progressed, the margin for error for the Cougars grew very small if they wanted to keep their high standing in both the rankings and the RPI. Losing to LMU in three sets last week had a devastating effect on both of those measurements. The NCAA has always underseeded the Cougars in the past and this gives them the excuse to do it again.
McKenna Miller’s season-ending injury two weeks ago was a tough blow but the loss to LMU — BYU’s third road match in five days; thanks, WCC — is going to test the Cougars’ confidence. They are still good enough to make a run in the NCAA Tournament.
LLOYD: This is where we will see what the Cougars are really made of. I still think BYU has done enough to get a top four seed and play some home games in the tournament, but either way this Cougar team is an elite squad that should be one of the favorites. I’m more interested in how BYU answers getting hit in the mouth. Some teams get tentative and apprehensive, while others get back up with fire in their eyes. The only way the Cougars are going to reach their potential is if they use the loss as motivation and show the heart of champions.
