October 13, 2018

MANISTEE — A man is dead after drowning in the Big Manistee River Thursday morning.

According to the Manistee County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred when three men — a 65-year-old Waterford man; a 61-year-old Wabash, Indiana; man and a 53-year-old Hilliard, Ohio man — were traveling on the river when their boat struck a submerged tree. The impact sent the men overboard and into the river.

Two of the men were able to swim to shore and one was not, police said.

The two men administered CPR to the third until Manistee County Animal Control Officer J.R. Nelson arrived at the scene in a civilian’s boat and took over.

The third man was loaded into the boat and transported to the Highbridge Boat Launch, where he was turned over to EMS, police said.

Police did not comment on which man drowned or the time he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Manistee County Medical Examiner.

Deputies responded to the incident at around 9:06 a.m. Thursday.

The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Michigan State Police, Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital EMS and Manistee, Dickson Township and Norman Township fire departments.
