Ga. Tech 48, Maryland 43
ATLANTA (AP) _ Bruce Dalrymple and Scott Petway each sank two free throws in the final 12 seconds as eighth-ranked Georgia Tech trimmed Maryland 48-43 Tuesday night, denying Coach Charles ″Lefty″ Driesell his 500th coaching victory.
It was the fourth loss in a row for Maryland, which returns home Thursday night to face Towson State in Driesell’s fifth shot at becoming the 17th coach in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I to win 500 games.
Dalrymple hit his free throws with 12 seconds remaining to give Tech a 46-43 lead and, after Maryland failed to score, Petway hit his with only two seconds to play.
The victory lifted Tech to 19-5 for the year and improved its Atlantic Coast Conference-leading mark to 8-4. Maryland fell to 19-10 and 5-6.
The Terps appeared to have the game under control with just under 11 minutes remaining when Derrick Lewis hit a 12-footer for a 29-22 lead.
Tech’s defense then forced several turnovers and a five-second held ball violation during a 15-0 spurt in which John Salley scored nine of his team- leading 11 points.
Maryland went scoreless for 5:32 and suddenly found itself trailing 37-29.
Len Byas, who had 21 points, sparked a comeback that saw Maryland close the lead to 44-43 with 35 seconds left, but Dalrymple and Petway then iced the victory from the free throw line.
