Cleveland man accused of punching woman unconscious, stomping her in fight over mail

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A Cleveland man is accused of punching a woman unconscious and repeatedly stomping on her during a fight over a package that was mailed to the wrong address.

James T. Gray III, 30, is charged with felonious assault in the Sunday incident outside a home on East 175th Street near Palda Drive, according to police reports and court records.

A 29-year-old woman suffered bruises on her face in the assault, police reports say. Cleveland EMS took her to University Hospitals for treatment.

Cleveland police officers went to the home shortly before the assault for a report of a threat. They learned the woman’s friend had threatened to shoot up the home during an argument over a missing package, a police report says.

The friend mistakenly had a package mailed to the home, but a resident told the friend that she had not seen it. They argued until a witness called 911 to report the friend’s threat, the police report says.

Officers told the woman and her friend to leave the home. Gray drove up moments later and asked the officers if everything was alright, then walked inside.

The officers left, but they became suspicious and decided to drive past the home once more. They circled the block and came back to find Gray arguing with the 29-year-old woman.

Gray then punched the woman in the face, knocking her unconscious, police reports say. He also stomped on the woman until the officers used a Taser on him to pull him away from her, police reports say.

Cleveland EMS took Gray to Marymount Hospital for an evaluation. He was later released and taken to the Cuyahoga County Jail.

Gray demanded a preliminary hearing during his arraignment Wednesday in Cleveland Municipal Court. The preliminary hearing is scheduled Sept. 19, court records say.

He remains in custody at the Cuyahoga County Jail on $50,000 bond.

Gray’s criminal history includes a 2017 domestic violence case in which he broke into a Cleveland home and threatened the mother of his children, Cuyahoga County court records say.

Gray broke into the woman’s home Jan. 5, 2017 through a kitchen window. He threatened to shoot up the house, and provided false information to the police officers who arrested him, police reports say.

He pleaded guilty in that case to aggravated menacing and falsification, court records say. He was sentenced to six months in the Cuyahoga County Jail.
