Mokena home built by Civil War veteran razed due to damage
MOKENA, Ill. (AP) — A Will County home built by a Civil War veteran has been demolished after being deemed too deteriorated to be salvaged.
The home in Mokena (moh-KEE’-nuh) was one of the oldest buildings in the village south of Chicago.
The (Tinley Park) Daily Southtown reports that demolition of the building was completed last month despite local historians’ efforts to save it.
Assistant village administrator Kirk Zoellner says the house’s owner had intended to rehabilitate it, but he razed it after finding significant termite and water damage.
The home was built by Civil War veteran Thomas Kiniry, who fought for the Union in the 100th Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
A member of the Will County Historic Preservation Commission had sought last year to nominate the house as a county historic landmark.
