Lebanese Red Cross Employee Killed in South Lebanon

April 2, 1992

SIDON, Lebanon (AP) _ A Lebanese Red Cross employee was found stabbed to death on a beach, and his naked body bore what appeared to be torture marks, police said Thursday.

There was no immediate indication of a motive in the slaying.

Claude Matta, a 34-year-old Christian, was discovered 18 hours after his family reported him missing, said a police official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

His body bore several red scars that investigators said might have been from a whipping.

Lebanese Red Cross sources in the predominantly Sunni Muslim city of Sidon, 25 miles south of Beirut, said Matta had worked as a relief worker since 1976 and had no military or religious affiliations associated with Lebanon’s 1975-1990 civil war.
