KENT, Ohio (AP) _ John Whorton hit 8 of 9 field goals for 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Kent State routed Hillsdale 91-56 Saturday in the season opener for both teams.

Kent used a 25-2 run in the second half to put the game away.

Greg Grimwood of Hillsdale hit one of his four 3-pointers with 16:34 remaining in the game to cut Kent's lead to 50-44.

The Golden Flashes then scored 25 of the next 27 points, capped by John Callaway's layup that made it 75-46 Kent.

Kent's other top scorers were Ed Norvell with 13 points, Calloway and Kyrem Massey with 12 each and Scott Effertz with 10. Norvell also had seven assists.

Grimwood led Hillsdale with 12 points. Teammate Tim Martin added 10 points and five assists.

The Flashes hit 7 of 10 (70 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc but only 6 of 16 (38 percent) free-throw attempts.
