Giants Acquire Ponson From Orioles

July 31, 2003

CHICAGO (AP) _ Sidney Ponson was traded from the Orioles to the San Francisco Giants on Thursday after turning down a contract extension from Baltimore.

The Giants acquired right-hander Kurt Ainsworth, left-hander Damian Moss and minor leaguer left-hander Ryan Hannaman.

Ponson was 14-6 with a 3.77 ERA, tied for second in the AL in victories, one behind Toronto’s Roy Halladay. Ponson had won four straight starts before losing to Minnesota Twins 5-1 Wednesday.

Ponson is eligible for free agency at the end of the season and had been offered a $15 million, three-year extension by the Orioles on July 19. The player and the team exchanged additional proposals but failed to reach an agreement.

Moss is 9-7 with a 4.70 ERA in 21 starts.

Ainsworth is 5-4 with a 3.82 ERA in 11 starts. He is on the disabled list with a broken shoulder blade and isn’t expected to pitch again this season.
