Life in prison for killer of his 72-year-old mother in Stead
RENO, Nev. (AP) — A 57-year-old northern Nevada man convicted of fatally shooting his elderly mother has been sentenced to life in prison.
Edward Pundyk pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the killing of 72-year-old Delphina Medeiros north of Reno at a home in Stead in October 2015. He must serve 29 years before he can be considered for parole.
Washoe County prosecutors say a neighbor called police when he saw a man with an AK-47 style weapon arguing with himself and then heard a gunshot.
Prosecutors say Pundyk fired a 12-gauge shotgun at officers who surrounded his house. A SWAT team found Medeiros dead in the front yard.
Detectives also found the remains of four cats that appeared to have been shot to death. They say more than 50 cats were found to be living in Pundyk’s home.
