Coach tells police he may have accidentally exposed himself -twice

December 5, 2018

BRIDGEPORT — A recently resigned high school soccer coach, accused of exposing himself in separate incidents to a Fairfield teen and a Norwalk woman, said that it might have happened accidentally, police said.

David Sharpe, 29, of Warren Street in Fairfield, the girls’ soccer coach at Westport Staples High School, was charged Saturday with public indecency and second-degree breach of peace.

He is scheduled to be arraigned in Superior Court here on Dec. 13. He is free on a promise to appear in court.

Police said Sharpe drove up to a 16-year-old girl in Fairfield in October and masturbated in front of her; he allegedly did the same thing in September to a 20-year-old Norwalk woman. At this point, he has only been charged in the Fairfield incident.

“I’m heavier than I should be right now. I do drive with my jeans unbuttoned a lot because my pants don’t fit me,” police said Sharpe told them. “It’s entirely possible I was driving in those areas with my pants unbuttoned. Could I have been exposed? It’s a big possible. Sure all of it’s possible.”

Sharpe resigned his coaching position after talking to officers, police said.

On Oct. 23, police said, the 16-year-old girl was walking in the area of Old Post Road and South Benson Road in Fairfield when she said an older black Ford Mustang pulled over and stopped just ahead of her, according to the arrest warrant affidavit. As the girl walked past the car, she looked in and saw a man, later identified as Sharpe, masturbating. The man looked at the girl and continued touching himself, the affidavit states.

The girl walked home and told her mother what she saw, and the mother called police.

Officers immediately went to the area but did not find the car.

However, sometime later, an officer spotted a similar Mustang on Kings Highway East but lost sight of it before he could pull it over, the affidavit continues. He did manage to get the license plate number, which came back to a Mustang owned by Sharpe.

On Sept. 26, a 20-year-old woman was walking in the area of Sasqua Road and Winfield Street in Norwalk when a man in a black Ford Mustang pulled up to her, the affidavit states. The driver of the Mustang was masturbating as he stared at the woman, the affidavit states.
