Houston Public Works reminds public to put grease in its place

November 23, 2018

Houston Public Works is sending a friendly reminder that when holiday cooking is done and clean-up begins, never pour grease down the drain.

Whether you fry turkey, make fresh tamales, latkes or curry, HPW reminds residents to put grease in its place.

“Cooking grease should never be poured down the drain. When grease settles in the sewer and cools, it can cause clogs that may back-up into homes or cause sanitary sewer overflows,” said Yvonne Forrest, Director of Houston Water.

Instead, Reuse the Grease OR can it, cool it, toss it:

Can it. Pour grease into an empty can.

Cool it. Let grease cool and cover it or seal it.

Toss it. Toss the can directly in the trash.
