Flyers’ Coach To Enter Hospital

March 1, 2000

PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Philadelphia Flyers coach Roger Neilson is scheduled to enter a hospital Monday to begin a stem cell transplant for cancer.

Neilson is expected to remain in the hospital for about three weeks, followed by 6-to-8 weeks of rehabilitation, the team said.

The 65-year-old Neilson was diagnosed with multiple myeloma on Dec. 9.

Next week’s transplant follows a large dose of chemotherapy received last week. He stepped down from his coaching duties just before taking that treatment.

Assistant coach Craig Ramsay will run the team, with help from Wayne Cashman, another assistant. Mike Stothers has joined the staff from the Philadelphia Phantoms, the Flyers’ affiliate in the American Hockey League.
