Fetters, Valentin back with Brewers

May 6, 1997

MILWAUKEE (AP) _ The Milwaukee Brewers welcomed back two of their best players on Monday when they reinstated shortstop Jose Valentin and closer Mike Fetters from the 15-day DL.

Valentin missed three weeks with a broken left middle finger. He took the roster spot vacated by utility infielder Tim Unroe, who was optioned to Triple-A Tucson.

The Brewers also sent right-handed reliever Al Reyes to Tucson to make room for Fetters, who’s been on the DL all season with a strained left hamstring. Reyes was called up on Saturday and pitched an inning Sunday.

Manager Phil Garner chose to send down Reyes after left-handed reliever Angel Miranda, a candidate for the 15-day DL with a sore throwing shoulder, threw well during a pregame workout.

Garner said Reyes was the odd-man out because with Fetters serving as a setup man to interim closer Doug Jones for at least a couple games, ``that’s just a duplication of roles.″

Fetters made two rehabilitation appearances with Tucson April 30 and May 2. He threw 1 2-3 innings, allowed one hit and two runs and walked two batters.

``Everything went well as far as physically,″ Fetters said. ``The linescores don’t show it, but I felt good. I’m ready to go.″

The Brewers are also keeping a close eye on No. 1 starter Ben McDonald, who’s scheduled to start against Oakland on Tuesday night.

McDonald, who’s been experiencing stiffness behind his right shoulder, might go on the 15-day DL if he’s still hurting during warmups. In that case, he’ll probably be replaced on the roster by left-hander Joel Adamson, who was called up over the weekend but not activated.

Unroe joined the Brewers on April 23 after second baseman Fernando Vina was placed on the 60-day DL with a broken ankle.

He went 1-for-5, and that one hit was a grand slam at Seattle on Saturday after he was informed of his pending demotion to the minors.
