Yankees’ Strawberry Set to Play
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) _ Darryl Strawberry’s comeback from colon cancer will come sooner than expected.
New York manager Joe Torre said Monday night that Strawberry will start at designated hitter when the Yankees travel to Fort Myers on Wednesday to face the Boston Red Sox.
``I was thinking more toward the middle of the month, but Darryl said he was ready,″ Torre said. ``The sooner he gets with it, the better chance he has of being ready.″
Strawberry, also slowed in recent years by knee problems, resumed his running program last week. He was not expected to make his spring training debut until next week.
Strawberry had colon cancer surgery last October, and will undergo chemotherapy through at least April. He started spring training as one of four candidates for what is expected to a left-field platoon.
``Even at DH, it will tell us how is knee is going to hold up and what his endurance is,″ Torre said.
