Pre-trial hearing in case of Brazilian killed in Australia
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — A pre-trial hearing was held Wednesday in the case of a Brazilian man charged with killing his former girlfriend in Australia.
Mario Marcelo Ferreira dos Santos Santoro and his lawyers were in court for a hearing during which the judge asked questions of the defendant and witnesses for the defense. It wasn’t immediately clear when a trial date would be set.
Santoro has been indicted on charges of killing Cecilia Muller Haddad in late April. He allegedly strangled Haddad, who was also Brazilian.
Her body was found in Sydney’s Lane Cove River on April 19. According to police, Santos fled to Brazil after Haddad’s killing.
Santoro was found hiding in a relative’s home in Rio’s Botafogo neighborhood and arrested July 7.
